A Natural Path to Healing our Hormonal Issues. // Written By Raul Garcia Pastrana , NATUROPATH & PERSONAL TRAINER

A Naturopath’s Perspective:
Understanding the Importance of Hormones

Travelling through the bloodstream, hormones are the body’s way of communicating (chemical) messages to us. As our organ systems receive these messages, this optimally regulates our vital bodily functions—such as blood sugar, blood pressure, and metabolism– alongside life milestones— such as pregnancy.

Consequently, one’s hormonal health can vary from a state of balance to that of imbalance. When bodily harmony deteriorates, the body then conveys to us—in its own language— an experience of uncomfortable symptoms.

Symptoms of hormonal imbalance may include

  • Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Osteoporosis
  • Reduced sex drive
  • Allergies
  • Weight gain
  • Skin changes
  • Fatigue
  • Water retention
  • Hair loss
  • Facial hair growth
  • Sometimes anxiety and depression

From a naturopath’s perspective on healing hormonal issues, the body possesses an intrinsic ability to heal itself when the body, mind, and emotions are supported.

Accordingly, Raul assesses his patients as a whole, valuing in-depth over surface-level examinations. That is, by paying attention to the entire body—instead of the affected area— Raul aims to intentionally tackle the root cause of the illness, instead of just treating the symptoms.

A Common Naturopathic Misconception

Within the realm of holistic health, it may be commonly misunderstood that naturopathic treatments only involve the ‘use of plants’; the false idea that exclusive herbal elements comprise a naturopath’s toolbox in treating patients.

Instead, naturopathy focuses on the healing power of nature, and thus inclusively incorporates an abundance of holistic healing tools. It may be highlighted here that while herbalists work solely with herbal medicines, naturopaths utilise a range of health practices. One of which includes herbal medicines, alongside lifestyle strategies, nutrition, and may further extend to homeopathy, and hydrotherapy.
